Organizations run more effectively within a framework of policies. Security, employee relations and business continuity programs all should be based on policies that define the direction for these areas. Policies should both inform and clarify for employees the correct approach in a particular situation.
Successful new program launches will depend on the quality of the policy framework that supports the program. The policy should anticipate everything with which the program will have to contend. But, it should not be so proscriptive that users are frustrated in their attempt to access the benefit of the program. In addition to any operational considerations, policies should be drafted considering not only legislative or regulatory compliance issues but also organizational culture and, if applicable, any labour relations issues.
